That Age Old Question: Where To Keep The Butter?

Some of us will store our butter in the fridge, while others will store it in the cupboard. But we have bad news for those in the latter group. Apparently, all of us should actually be keeping our butter refrigerated.
Metro spoke to Dairy UK who said ‘butter should definitely be kept in the fridge, not on the counter.’
This is because at room temperature, butter is more likely to go off – even though we love our butter soft and easily spreadable.
But the Good Housekeeping Institute has split opinions. While some team members store their butter on the counter in a container (like their mums used to), others keep it in the fridge.
Angela Trofymova, Food Strategy and Testing Manager for Good Housekeeping tells us why she keeps hers in the fridge.
‘The main reason is to avoid discolouration on the surface and to stop rancidity,’ she says. ‘Heat in the kitchen from cooking appliances is kryptonite to butter.’
And before you worry that you may be harming your health if you don’t store your butter in the fridge, fear not.
The Food Standards Agency recommends refrigerating purely for the quality of the product, rather than safety reasons.
So there you go… fridge for quality, counter/cupboard for soft and spreadable.
