The news headlines aren’t typically full of cheery stories these days so I thought I would pass along this story of how the poliovirus is steadily being eradicated around the world.
According to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation website, the poliovirus was found in 125 countries and had paralyzed more than 350,000 people worldwide as recently as 1988. Dr. Jay Wenger, who works for the foundation says that “In 2015 we could find only 74 cases, in 2016; 37 and in 2017 only 12 cases have been found so far in two countries”.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated more than 3 billion dollars toward The Global Polio Eradication Initiative since it’s inception.
While some medical experts doubt that the virus can be completely eliminated, the vaccination program certainly has made a huge difference in reducing the number of active cases as the numbers indicate.
