A Wildcard contestant in the Scripps Spelling Bee has won the most exciting Bee in it’s 93 years.
Karthik Nemmani of McKinney, Tex. Was the underdog and capitalized as his opponent Naysa Modi, the frontrunner, misspelled “Bewusstseinslage”. Which means “State of consciousness devoid of sensory components” Translation source
Often, Nemmani spelled with his arms clasped behind his back, barely betraying emotion. When it was down to two contestants — him and 12-year-old Naysa Modi, also from the Dallas area — Nemmani remained calm as Modi misspelled “Bewusstseinslage.”
The word that got him the win is “koinonia,” a word with Greek roots meaning a spiritual communion.
