Scottish Teachers Make Pet’s Passing A Teachable Moment With A Viking Funeral

Students at an elementary school in Scotland honored their class goldfish by sending them off in a Viking funeral.

The Grade 3 and 4 students at Papdale School in Kirkwall were learning about Vikings and their God Valhalla.  The class also had 2 goldfish that had just passed away.  The teachers saw this as a teachable moment and decided to host a proper Viking funeral by building miniature viking ships to help send off their pets.

“We worked in teams of two or three to create Viking Long Ships suitable to send to Valhalla,” a post on the school’s blog stated. “We knew that the Vikings would only have sent the most beautiful ships to be burned for important people in their communities.”

Each student got to share their memories of Freddy and Bubbles before sending their ships down river.  The ships carrying the honoured goldfish were set aflame in true Viking funeral fashion.
