Would you wear a bit of fashion that was fashioned from fish? Fish leather is getting to be popular among the fashionistas but is becoming available for the average individual to wear. Many well known labels are experimenting with the material on international runways. This includes Prada and Nike.
These bigger efforts are being fuelled by Icelandic fisheries and their efforts to utilize all of the fish that they catch. There is even an entire industry being built up around it including Atlantic Leather a company which produces leather from salmon, perch, wolffish, and cod. But they are not the only people interested in fish leather.
In fact one Newfoundlander has turned it into something of a small-business. Being raised on the rock dealing with cod comes somewhat natural and Jamie-Lee Comier of JL Designs, who found someone selling the bits of that fish which don’t often get used and she took it and turn them into beautiful looking jewellery.
Sadly Comier says that it seems like that was a one time deal and is hopeful that by the time she needs to restock her supplies some entrepreneur will have seen the value of fish leather in Canada and set up shop.
