You may recall the halftime show during the Grey Cup when CTV had Shania Twain promote CTV’s newest foray into the world of music reality with a Canadian talent show called “The Launch”. We have had to rely on shows like “America’s Got Talent”, “The Voice” and “Dancing With the Stars” etc to get our amateur talent show fix ever since the days of “Canadian Idol” had us cheering on Brian Melo (how many years ago? – 10 I think)
Shania Twain is one of many “mentors” on the show. Others include Boy George of Culture Club fame, Fergie (Black Eyed Peas) Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic and several others.
From 10,000 applicants (according to CTV) come some local acts worth cheering on.
- Logan Staats from Six Nations of the Grand River. He started writing and performing music in his teens, later becoming an award-winning artist. He has shared the stage with acts such as Buffy Sainte-Marie, Keith Secola and Mumford and Sons. His distinctive sound and haunting voice lends perfectly to his genres of folk, blues and soul. He appears on the debut of “The Launch” on January 10th.
- “Poesy” a.k.a. Sarah Botelho grew up in Ancaster but now calls London her home. She has been writing songs since she was nine and recently released an album called “The Spotless Mind”. Her episode airs January 24th. Her stage name is “a really old word for poetry”, she explains.
- LITEYEARS, from Stoney Creek, was just about to call it quits when they got a call from “The Launch”. Brent, Wirth, 27, and brother Brian, 32, have been on the local music scene for some time. Graduates of Orchard Park School in Stoney Creek, their band “Thought Beneath Film” produced one album called “Cartographers” They have re-invented themselves adding bassist Nick Haberer of Niagara Falls and drummer Joey Muha from Port Dover. They are hoping for good things when they appear on the 17th.
