Officials have warned residents along Florida’s Gulf Coast to finish preparations and evacuate, as the strengthening Hurricane Michael continued its approach. The storm — now officially a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds near 195 km/h — is expected to make landfall on Wednesday afternoon somewhere near Panama City, Florida.
But as gulf waters churned ahead of the massive storm, the first effects were already being felt along the shores of the state’s Panhandle. At least one person was reported missing Tuesday in the Gulf of Mexico. Rescue personnel were reportedly searching for a man, who was seen going into the water near Navarre Beach, Fla., but never resurfaced.
Elsewhere, residents hurried to complete preparations and traffic was backed up for miles as people worked to get out of the way of the menacing storm.
