Flood Message #1 – Combined Flood Warning and Flood Watch for Grand River Watershed
Heavy rainfall occurred over a large area in the northern portion of the Grand River watershed. Weather radar indicates in excess of 100 mm of rainfall occurred over a large area in the vicinity of Grand Valley. Much of this rainfall occurred between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. Friday morning. The heavy rainfall has resulted in a rapid rise in river levels across the northern portion of the watershed.
Town of Grand Valley
Hwy 25 through the Town of Grand Valley is currently closed; portions of Grand Valley are currently flooded, with multiple road closures. Flood co-ordinators are asked to maintain the road closure of Hwy 25 and assist residents. Flooding through Grand Valley is expected to be similar to flooding that occurred in December 2008. Levels through Grand Valley area expected to peak Friday morning, dependant on whether additional rainfall occurs.
Township of Mapleton / Village of Drayton
Flood co-ordinators in the Township of Mapleton are asked to warn Village of Drayton residents in the level 3 flood area. Levels through Drayton are expected to peak early Friday afternoon.
Township of Centre Wellington / Elora
Flood co-ordinators in Centre Wellington are asked to warn boardwalk shop owners. Expect flooding of the boardwalk shops though Elora on Friday afternoon. Flows through Elora are expected to peak later today and remain high through the weekend.
Township of Woolwich / St. Jacobs, West Montrose, Elmira, Conestogo Golf Course
Flood co-ordinators in Woolwich township are requested to close the Three Bridges Road bridge upstream of St. Jacobs, and it should be expected that this bridge will remain closed through the weekend. Township staff are also asked to monitor Glasglow Street as flow may approach the capacity of that road later Friday. Flows on the Conestogo River are expected to peak later this afternoon or early evening and remain high through the weekend.
The trailer park in West Montrose will be flooded early Friday afternoon; the trailer park operator has been advised. Township staff are asked to monitoring conditions in the Village of West Montrose; it is expected that levels will peak later this evening through West Montrose.
Woolwich Township flood co-ordinators are asked to warn the Conestogo Golf course; the golf course may need to raise their pedestrian bridges that span the Grand River.
Flows will be high along the Canagagigue Creek through the Town of Elmira, however no flooding of structures is anticipated at this time. Flooding can be expected in the municipal park downstream of Arthur Street, municipal staff are asked to monitor and close this park as necessary.
City of Kitchener / Bingeman Trailer Park
City of Kitchener flood co-ordinators are asked to warn Bingeman Trailer Park as levels are expected to exceed flooding thresholds later Friday evening through the park.
A flood watch is being issued for the Grand River south of Cambridge. Flows will be higher than normal through the weekend.
