Cows On The 401 Friday Night

Some late night drivers had an unusual situation to deal with which ended up shutting down sections of Highway 401 in Mississauga on Friday night after a collision involving a cattle carrier let loose several of the animals onto the roads. According to OPP Officer Sgt. Kerry Schmidt the truck hauling the cattle hit a guard rail in the westbound lanes of the 401 around  11:30 p.m. Friday night.

This collision caused a split on one side of the trailer which allowed about a dozen of the animals to get loose and take to the road where they wandered about until being rounded up in the early hours of Saturday. Causing quite a few delays and no shortage of amusement on social media as some laughed about the hashtag #CowsLooseOnTheHighway while others pondered how long it had been since the 401 had seen a cattle drive.

Sadly however the situation was not all laughs, the driver was taking to hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries and another dozen animals did not survive the crash.
